Gifting
THE BIG IDEA
According to the Torah Omens this is a favorable time to examine your impulses and attitudes toward gift giving.
The miskhan, the temporary dwelling of divinity amongst the people in the desert, was to be made entirely from contributions of the people. After weeks of endless miracles and divine care, this week marks the first time the liberated slave nation is invited to give back. The gold, silver, animals skins, woods, oils and unique fabrics needed to meet divinities specifications were to come voluntarily from the people - and the people rose to the occasion giving wholeheartedly.
Take time this weekend to notice the places your generosity flows easily, and where you feel less open to sharing.
GIVING EXERCISE
Generosity is a spiritual muscle, like any other, that needs to be exercised.
EXERCISE #1 - make change.
Take a large bill (20, 50 or 100) and break it into small change.
Each day (other than Shabbat) go out for a walk with some of that small change in your pocket.
Whenever someone asks you for money, give something to them.
Continue this practice each day until you are out of small change.
Journal each day and note the way giving feels.
