THE BIG IDEA

It is sometimes hard to remember, but there were two parts to the revelation at Sinai. The ten commandments that we read last week, and the 53 Mishpatim ( rules ) we read this week. And while it is important that we, as a people,  identify with the dramatic burst of revelation and the essential 10  –  it is equally important that we learn how to understand and deal with ‘accidents’, ‘misfortunes’, and poor life choices.

The additional rules given at Sinai force us to acknowledge the soul complexity of every human being, and to trust that no action goes unnoticed or unpunished - even if you think you got away with it in this lifetime. 

So let’s all be grateful for clear rules and clear consequences to help us get through this life with as little soul damage as possible.
